Sunday 16 June 2019, 08:30 – 17:00 – Tour to Skagen and surroundings with lunch
The first stop is Råbjerg Mile which is the largest migrating dune in Denmark. For many centuries the West coast has struggled with migrating dunes due to the harsh wind and sand covered areas - and being close to Grenen in Skagen, the weather at Råbjerg Mile is far from mild. From the top of the dune, you will experience a stunning view. Walking to the top can be a bit challenging, but the view is worth the effort. We continue on to Den Tilsandede Kirke (The Sandburied Church). In the dunes West of Skagen town is the Tower of the old parish church, the medieval St. Lawrence Church, today known as 'The Sandburied Church'. For four hundred years it gathered the Congregation until sand drift lay across the church road and cemetery - and the decay began. In 1795 the town was forced to cease to hold church services, and the church was closed. Skagen is a small town that is very popular especially during the summer where tourists enjoy the nice beaches and cosy restaurants. It is also famous for the Skagen painters who lived there from the end of the 19th century. We will enjoy a traditional Danish lunch in Skagen and then head of to Grenen (the branch), the northern top of Denmark where two seas meet, namely the Skagerrak and the Kattegat. This is a unique natural phenomenon and the collision of the waves is clearly visible to the naked eye. After the visit to Grenen the bus will take us back to Aalborg.
